Aerokits Sea Nymph.

À propos de ce bateau
An acceptable offer was made to fill this small gap in my Classic Model Power Boat collection, and it has been accepted.
I have always liked the look of the Aerokits Sea Nymph ever since I saw a nicely built and painted one in the 1960’s.
It is a good looking model boat…….if only it was a little bigger….

I think the outboard motor size that would suite the Sea Urchin is one of the old types that used to be sold in the Keil Kraft catalogue to fit the small CRESTA speedboat and the like.
Small and inexpensive and not very powerful.

I think I may have found a mini version of your powerful outboard motor.
The sizes, will need to be checked, but it is definitely smaller than yours and if it will fit, I could be tempted to save up the pennies and buy one.......but they are still an expensive little motor, and like yours, I am guessing that it will need some "extras" to make it ready to run.?
I am guessing that this outboard will still be too big and too powerful for my Sea Urchin .....and it would be an expensive option to making the transom mounted rudder work (!) .. but it may (possibly) be suitable for a Mini Sprite Plus?
The pictures have not down-loaded very well, but this link may work so the motor can be seen better.:-

If I can find a small outboard motor, I will get my Sea Urchin built and use the outboard to power it with.
Thanks for your observations about the smaller sized outboard motors you have seen.
Bob.
Finding suitable outboards is a real problem especially if you want some performance. Not a problem with Faun as it's only a slow river/lake cruiser. You asked about a smaller TFL outboard on another thread, compared to what I've got for my Sprite Plus build. They do one but I passed on one because it's not a traditional looking outboard as it has a curved "shaft" for the flexi-drive. Could be fitted to a Sprite but doesn't really suit the old classics. There are more 3D printed options becoming available though if you can get one at the right size.
How about a Sea Urchin?
Swap the troublesome outboard mounted rudder for one of your smaller outboard motors.
I have a new Sea Urchin kit hidden away somewhere and mounting the outboard rudder assembly and finding a suitable rudder linkage has been a bit of an off-put, but replacing the rudder with a small outboard motor should be a really simple fix/upgrade.......and I think it would suite the boat beautifully.
Once I can find a small outboard motor I think I will have a go at that - wish I had thought of it years ago!
It could be a marriage made in heaven.
Bob.
But I wouldn't want to modify a nice kit like that and in any case to add to your previous post I think that would be one for Will as keeper of the kits!
I know what you mean about laser ply but as long as it's well painted it's not a problem. Better than Liteply which I refuse to touch. So a new kit could be an option and my first! There are other old models to consider as well.
When I first saw this new rudder assembly, I thought that the tiller arm was missing, but these early rudders were intended to have the same piece of metal bar (that is the rudder pivot shaft) being bent-over to fit onto the ratchet!
Crude and basic, but it would have been typical for the age of this kit when most model boats were powers by small diesel engines and run as "straight runners" across the width of the local pond or boating lake.
Bob
I paid too much for the kit (I could have had a new reproduction laser-cut copy kit for the same money) - but I like the original old saw-cut kits and enjoy building them "as they were intended" to be all those years ago.
The new reproduction kits will probably fit together better too, but being laser-cut the plywood used will be water bonded..........and I prefer the resin bonded birch plywood used in these original kits, and I think it will be more durable in the longer term.
Not all Classic Model Power Boats get to see the water too often, and nice clean classic original kits like this one tend to get snapped-up by the collectors and are never built, but I like to drive my model power boats as often as I can and so maybe I should not build this particular kit?
One option that I have is to copy all the parts by cutting new replacements and building them instead. This would preserve a really nice original kit, so if anyone would like to have it, please let me know and I will build a copy from new wood.
